Crossings (2025)
Cabinet Institute
20 January to 15 March 2025
curated by Jeanne Turpault & Gaspar Willmann
Specifically conceived for Cabinet Institute, the work explores the drawer as a space of withdrawal and revelation. Its opening requires a gesture, to lean, to approach, to search, transforming the act of looking into an act of attention, echoing the themes of memory and vulnerability that run through the artist's practice.
The installation combines sand collected from the beaches of Calais, a territory marked by migration and contemporary violence, with a Papilio phorcas butterfly, native to sub-Saharan Africa.
Resting on this unstable ground, it becomes a metaphor for exile, fragility, and movements from the Global South to the North. By bringing together fragments from distant geographical and political contexts, the work questions the asymmetries inherited from colonial history and the ways they continue to inhabit bodies and gazes.
